Diploma In Nursing (KPT/JPS/KA7153/11/15)(PA7153)
INTRODUCTION

This program trains students in the nursing field to become Registered
Nurses, certified and approved by the Malaysian Nursing Board. The
program lays a broad foundation of theory, knowledge and clinical applications thereof.
The balance between learning the appropriate techniques, knowledge and
 practicing them is split exactly 50/50, while students will also learn to develop
critical thinking and sharpen their soft skills too.


OBJECTIVES 

The Aim of Diploma Nursing Program in UNISEL is to nurture and
produce knowledgeable, competent and confident nursing graduates,
 registered with the Malaysian Nursing Board, to become committed,
dedicated, caring and capable of providing a safe professional nursing
care to the wide variety of clinical situation which may arise in the
current practice of nursing management.


Vision

To be a centre of excellence in training professional nurses towards the
wellness of society through assimilation of quality teaching and training,
dissemination of knowledge, social consciousness and accountability.


Mission

To achieve and maintain the excellence in nursing by:
i.    Producing knowledgeable and competent graduates in nursing practice.
ii.    Developing graduates with strong sense of ethics and professionalism.
iii.    Transforming graduates into credible, accountable and socially
conscious human being for the wellness of society.


PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION

The programme will take 3 years for full-time basis. This duration is inclusive
of clinical attachment at designated clinic/hospitals that has been identified
by the MOH and endorsed by the Malaysian Nursing Board. Academic year
will consist of two (2) long semesters that will commence in the month of
 January and July. Each semester will consist of 26 weeks duration inclusive holidays and examination.

PRACTICAL ATTACHMENT

•    Students will be placed at local private healthcare institutions recognised
by MOH and MNB (Malaysian Nursing Board)
•    At the end of practical training, students will be able to demonstrate their
ability to apply professional nursing care to the wide variety of clinical situation
which may arise in the current practice of nursing management.


CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

A qualified graduate will be sitting for Registration Examination conducted
by Malaysian Nursing Board (Lembaga Jururawat Malaysia,LJM) in order 
to be given License to practice as a  Professional Nurse.

Professional Nurses have a choice to specialize in various fields such as:
i.    Midwifery
ii.    Paediatrics
iii.    Gerontology
iv.    Emergency & Traumatology
v.    Renal
vi.    Public health nurse
vii.    Cardiothoracic and many more
Overall, demand for professionally trained and qualified nurses is higher in
Malaysia even than elsewhere in the world. At least 130,000 nurses
need to be trained by year 2020 to meet WHO’s nurse-to-patient ratio (1:200)


CAREER DEVELOPMENT 

Professional nurses are also given opportunities for advancement in their
nursing education.
Diploma holders can progress towards a Degree, Masters or PhDs in nursing
which can be done either locally or abroad.
Professional nurses will also continue for career advancement towards Nurse
Educator, Diabetic Educator, Counsellor, Nursing Clinician, Manager and
various fields.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES
For Local Students:

SPM or equivalent with 5 (five) credits in the following subjects:

i.    Mathematics;
ii.    1 science subject
(Biology/Physics/ Chemistry/ General Science)
iii.    Any other 3 (three) subjects; and
iv.    At least Pass Bahasa Malaysia and English


For International Students and Local Students Studying Abroad:

GCE/O Level or equivalent with 5 (five) credits in the following subjects;

i.    Mathematics
ii.    1 science subject (Biology / Physics / Chemistry / General Science)
iii.    Any other 3 (three) subjects; and

English Proficiency:
Candidates should have IELTS (5.5) / TOEFL (550) paper based or equivalent.

Qualified candidates for Diploma in Nursing will be short listed for an entry interview.
